Nebula Performances is a performance centre dedicated to nurturing both renowned and aspiring musicians to create a platform for all artists to shine. We aim to foster a diverse and inclusive environment, creating strong connections to the surrounding community and artistic network in our home of Vancouver, BC and the rest of Canada.

🎶Nebula Summer MusicFest is so excited to announce the addition of David Meek to its faculty. Learn more about him in this post!!

Tenor, David Meek, sang opera in Canada, USA, and Germany in a career spanning 20 years. He was a leading tenor at the Stadtsoper, Wuerzburg where he sang 20 roles in a hundred plus performances. After several years teaching at UBC, he became head of the voice/opera at The Vancouver Academy of Music where over 25 years he produced 25 full operas before retiring in 2015. Three of his students were winners at the Met Opera Auditions in New York.

• Perform vocal chamber music with professional instrumentalists from Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony.

We’re thrilled to announce that Jeremy Berkman is our new Artist-in-Residence at Nebula! We look forward to his inspiring presence, creative collaborations, and the exciting, unique musical projects he’ll help bring to life at Nebula.

Jeremy Berkman is a graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music, with degrees in both music and economics, and holds a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School of Music. He worked as a Stage Manager at the Aspen Music Festival for five summers before moving to Vancouver in 1989 to take on the same role with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In 1992, he left that position and became Principal Trombonist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, while also working as a freelance trombonist across classical, jazz, and commercial settings. Through his efforts to build and bridge communities - as is the wonderful focus on Nebula society - Berkman has become an important part of Vancouver’s musical landscape as a producer, curator, and advocate.

✨ Mark your calendars — Nebula’s inaugural Chinese Art Song Workshop will take place on April 16th at 3:00pm! Led by our Artistic Director, Wenwen Du, this workshop offers an invaluable opportunity to dive into the rich tradition of Chinese art song, where expressive music meets the nuances of Mandarin diction. Through the intimate collaboration between singer and pianist, participants will explore the genre’s unique musical and linguistic artistry. All are welcome to attend.

To offer a glimpse of what’s to come, we invite you to enjoy this moving performance by Catherine Thornsley and Wenwen Du, recorded during our Chinese Art Song Recital last September.

This art song, ‘That Is Me‘ <那就是我>, is a celebrated work that poignantly captures the feeling of homesickness. Often, distance deepens one’s emotional ties to home—and this piece eloquently conveys that sentiment, with music that resonates with heartfelt delicacy and emotional depth. ✨

✨April 16 - Chinese Vocal Workshop
Join us for an exciting Chinese Vocal Workshop with Wenwen Du designed for both singers and pianists! This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to explore and develop your skills in Chinese Art Song. Under the expert guidance of Wenwen Du, you’ll learn to master the nuances of the Chinese language, refine your vocal technique, and interpret the rich, expressive styles of Chinese classical music. Whether you’re looking to enhance your repertoire or deepen your understanding of this beautiful tradition, this workshop is the perfect platform to elevate your artistry. Participants who are participating in the Sing, Snack, Social workshop later that day will receive a $10 dollar discount. The cost to participate is 45$/20 min and 60$/30 min. The price to audit is 15$

Join us for an inspiring session designed to strengthen your vocal technique and collaborative skills. Participants will be given a 30 minute slot to work one-on-one with professor Ho in front of a live audience. We are currently accepting applications for violinists. The cost for participating in this masterclass is 100$/30 min and 25$ to audit.

Nebula Performances was thrilled to welcome Vancouver Opera’s Principal Conductor and Music Director, Jacques Lacombe, for an engaging masterclass focused on French opera and repertoire.

Seven singers and two pianists had the invaluable opportunity to work with Maestro Lacombe, gaining expert insight into phrasing, dynamics, and the nuances of the French language.

“Working with Jacques Lacombe was an incredibly rewarding experience. His guidance was not only technically astute but also deeply inspiring. His ability to immediately pinpoint areas for improvement—whether in phrasing, dynamics, or the nuances of the French language—was invaluable. What stood out most was his approach to bringing out the emotional depth of the piece while maintaining precision in execution. His clear communication style allowed us to experiment, take risks, and learn from each other in a supportive environment.”

This was an another success for Nebula, which presented an excellent selection of operatic gems! Such a versatile program with a galaxy of young and attractive singers, advanced and in progress, beautifully dressed, as befits any opera gala, could only be what it was, a wonderful and engaging event! Bravo!

The program was very nicely put together, keeping the drama and the audience’s attention constantly growing. The finale was simply breathtaking! I especially appreciated Anton’s introduction to the Te Deum! The insight into the real setting (St. Andrew’s Church in Rome) with valuable musical and logistical details was very interesting and educational. Then... the vocal performance with Anton and the choir and you as the orchestra was simply amazing!

It was such a nice evening, spoiled not only by the music but also by the constant generosity of the hosts!!! I had the added pleasure of sitting next to Lynol, with whom I shared the emotions and beauty of the performance.

An Evening of Cultural Harmony at the Consulate-General of China’s Chinese New Year’s Eve Feast

Nebula Performances’ artists-in-residence—Wanshuai Yu, Geoff Schellenberg, Catherine Thornsley, and Yanis Hong—brought warmth and tradition to the stage with beloved Chinese songs from last fall’s Chinese Art Song Recital. Their music honoured heritage while embracing modern connections, a reminder of how music transcends borders and unites people.

Heartfelt thanks to Consul General Yang Shu, Cultural Consul Xiao Yao, and the entire team at the Consulate-General of China for their dedication to cultural exchange. It was a privilege for the Nebula Team to share Chinese music in this celebration of community and tradition.

“It is more common these days to hear Filipino Kundiman revived as pop song versus classical art song and these songs were a part of my soundscape growing up. Although Dahil sa’yo (Because of you) is about profound adoration, dedication and love for your significant other, when I hear this song I recall fond memories of my family: the morning bustling of my ninang (aunt) cooking, Grandma’s morning soap operas on the tv, and the shuffling of my mom’s feet as gets ready for the new day, amongst many others.

Family values are strong in the Filipino culture and it can be tough sometimes when I don’t get to see my family as often as I used to now that I live on my own however since discovering Filipino Kundiman, I cherish these moments on the stage to connect with them and honour the ones in my life who gave me everything to be who and where I am today”
